Which industries does FDA regulate?

FDA ensures that our food intake is harmless and healthy. It takes care that the cosmetics we use won’t injure us. Further, it ensures that medicines, medical devices, and radiation-emitting consumer products are secure and efficient. FDA also regulates food and drugs for pets and farm animals.

What are the products that FDA controls?

Currently FDA regulates the import of products that fall into around 100 industries. These industries are grouped into the following six different categories.

1. Biologics:

Product and manufacturing establishment licensing, safety of the nation’s blood supply, research to establish product standards and develop improved testing methods.

2. Drugs:

Product approvals, OTC and prescription drug labeling, and drug manufacturing standards.

3. Food and Cosmetics:

Safety and labeling of all food products, cosmetics and bottled water. The food products exclude meat and poultry. FDA controls game meats, such as venison, ostrich and snake.

4. Medical Devices:

Pre-market approval of new devices, manufacturing and performance standards, tracking reports of device malfunctioning and unfavorable reactions.

5. Radiation-Emitting Electronic Products:

radiation safety performance standards for microwave ovens, television receivers, diagnostic x-ray equipment, cabinet x-ray systems, laser products, ultrasonic therapy equipment, and mercury vapor lamps and sunlamps. Accrediting and inspecting mammography facilities.

6. Products for animals:

livestock feeds, pet foods, and veterinary drugs and devices.
